The 2014 beach renourishment project can now proceed as planned. Longboat Key voters passed a beach bond referendum in March this year, which would allow a $16 million beach renourishment project to place white sand along Longboat’s beaches, as the town does approximately every 10 years. Unfortunately, the vote was deemed invalid when it was determined the town did not sufficiently advertise the beach bond referendum in the newspaper

The North Shore Road beach access re-opened Friday, July 1, in time for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, according to Longboat Key Public Works Department. Beachgoers can now visit the beach access after more than 130,000 cubic yards of white sand was placed on the beach as part of the town’s $4.5 million beach renourishment project
