2010 year in review: Peacocks, raccoons take over Longboat; policy sought

This year many residents wrote to town hall complaining of too many peacocks and prolific numbers of raccoons. Both animals created much unwelcomed excrement, and raccoons were particularly abhorred as they carry multiple diseases transmittable to humans including rabies, roundworm, leptospirosis and distemper.

There will soon be a lot less peacock pride on Longboat Key. Within the next month Village Association President Michael Drake says peacock numbers on Longboat Key will be cut from about 70, which roam the Village, to the stated goal of 12.

Village Association appeals to Town

Michael Drake expressed his concerns at the Monday night commission meeting over residents in the Longboat Village having to cross Gulf of Mexico Drive to get to the beach. He suggested a pedestrian bridge to cross GMD so that it would not be as dangerous.
