Trolley gains ground on LBK

For those who use the Longboat trolley to get around town, there is some good news. According to Town Manager Bruce St. Denis, at the Nov. 30 Manatee County Board of County Commissioners workshop, it was reported that the cost to continue the trolley service through the Manatee County portion of Longboat Key would cost $241,441 instead of the $300,000 originally anticipated. Manatee County is willing to contribute $200,000 toward the trolley’s operation, which left a $100,000 shortfall in the original estimate, but now only $41,440 may be needed to meet the cost.

West Coast Florida Gulf passes are in jeopardy and will become dangerous to navigation if politicians play politics without regard to facts. Recent actions by governmental entities, to request dredging Longboat Key Pass using the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (ACOE) original channel alignment, are irresponsible. This would waste limited federal dollars, create a danger to public safety and cause a navigational hazard.

The trolley will roll another year on Longboat Key following the successful negotiation by the Town Commission to receive a commitment of $200,000 in funding from Manatee County at a think-tank meeting held Nov. 2 between the Longboat Key, Manatee and Sarasota County commissions.
