Here are a few thoughts and predictions about the coming year on Longboat Key: 1. The trend toward replacing ageing beachfront homes with larger homes will continue in spite of the current economic downturn. Decades ago, farsighted commissions and dedicated residents pointed Longboat Key in the direction of becoming an exclusive seasonal retirement community. For the most part their dreams have been fulfilled.

The Longboat Key Garden Club will hold its 35th Annual Home Tour March 5. Included in this year’s tour is the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a division of Ringling College of Art and Design, which will offer visitors a tour of its galleries and the sculpture, painting, pottery and jewelry studios.

What did you do for lunch on Thursday? Business owners and community members were “Brown Bagging It” at Longboat Key Center for the Arts in the historic Longbeach Village at the north end of Longboat Key. The lunch served a full entrée of local artists, business owners hob-knobbing and community members working out plans to continually make Longboat Key the place to be.

Barely 11 miles separates the two bridges that attach Longboat Key to the rest of the world. In between, the relatively short strand of Gulf of Mexico Drive linking the two reveals an island filled with recreational opportunities, beginning with the extra-wide sidewalk that parallels the road from bridge to bridge.
