In real democracy, 45% of the board would represent the minority, meaning three out of seven commissioners. Because everyone votes for everyone on Longboat Key and we are running now as slates, we are going to see more and more one-dimensional Commissions excited that “they will now get things done.”

The key is aging rapidly and you cannot ignore that, and one of the main problems is getting people to recognize it; and this commission is trying to solve that. There’s a problem with getting people to recognize that the key needs to be kept up. Most of the key was built before 1980, and the Comprehensive Plan was written in 1984, which means as soon as the plan was written, most of the buildings were immediately not up to code. We need to recognize that and make them better,”

Resident Larry Grossman has finished the qualification process and will be running against Mayor Jim Brown for the District 4 seat, and Longboat resident Irwin Pastor has completed the third phase in the qualifying process and is anticipated to qualify by deadline Monday.

Updated June 30, 2012. When I was on the commission, I tried to persuade the commission to get various department heads out of their gas-guzzling SUVs, and into more appropriate automobiles. Unfortunately, there was little appetite on that commission to oppose the town manager. The excuse used by the town manager was his need to have an SUV in case of a storm. That has occurred on average once every five years so far.
