My internist cousin says he knows who will live among his older patients: those who own dogs. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provisionally agrees. They believe the data show that dog (and cat) ownership can lower blood pressure, feelings of loneliness, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while at the same time increasing chances for exercise and socialization. Gallup’s annual Health and Healthcare survey, where Gallup asks Americans to say how much they weigh and has every year since 2001, reported Nov. 29 that Americans are an average of 20 pounds heavier than they were 20 years ago. The average weight for an adult man is now 196 pounds and for a woman it is 160 pounds, 20 pounds more than in 1990. Each of them would prefer to weigh between 16 and 22 pounds less.
