What the commissioners want to do to my neighborhood upsets me, and it is personal. I don’t appreciate the commissioners deciding what is best for me, any more than I appreciate having the federal government telling me what to do, where I can go and which Wall Street gambling losses I must pay for.

Let’s face it, the current system of nominating presidential candidates is a disaster and has been for some time. The political landscape was dramatically altered in 1970 when the Democratic Party created the McGovern Commission and sent them traipsing around the country getting the views of rank-and-file Democrats as how to make the nominating of presidential candidates more democratic, more in tune with the views of the hoi-polloi.

Less than a month remains until the municipal election here on Longboat Key. This means that we must be in the midst of the ‘Silly Season’ in our own town of Tiny Towne South. We’ll have fewer names on the ballot than we saw last month in the Republican primary. Many of you have already received your absentee ballots by now. That’s two candidates for one office, no amendments, no referenda.

Mayor Jim Brown, and more importantly Vice Mayor Dave Brenner, have recently voiced their opinions that properties on Longboat Key that are more than 25-years-old have served their economic life and need to be allowed to redevelop.
