Each year’s end, Longboat Key News reviews the events that occurred during the year, particularly the issues that are shaping the town and its future. Many events are ongoing and have been debated and changed over several years and multiple commissions, such as the Vision Plan, the beach renourishment project and structural solutions to the North End beach erosion problem.
Longboat Key’s future. In many ways, the words are both a beginning and an end. Like Longboat Key literally, our community is an island apart. For years we were perceived as an insular wealthy community with overwrought strict codes, an anti-development attitude and a complete desire to control every aspect of public life.
Longboat appears to have taken a metaphorical turn in its move to a new identity. Last Wednesday, the Town Commission and a packed chamber full of business owners and residents discussed the Vision Plan. Town staff, residents and business owners along with consultants have crafted a document they believe embodies what Longboat is, where it came from and what it ought do to deal with the challenges at its doorstep.
