Although Sarasota-Bradenton International has been trying to get Condor Air, a German airline, to fly in and out of the airport for two years, the airline told the airport Wednesday that it will not be flying into Sarasota-Bradenton International.

The Sarasota County portion of Gulf of Mexico Drive will be repaved at a later date, moved from its original start date of Aug. 23 to sometime in September. Heavy rains have been delaying the repaving project, as well as scheduling conflicts.

Rusty Chinnis, Longboat Village resident, former president of the Florida Outdoor Writers Association and president of Outdoor Travel Productions Inc., won a first place award and three second-place awards at the Florida Outdoor Writers Association competition. All pieces appeared in “Fly Fishing in Salt Waters” magazine, where Chinnis is a contributing editor.

A nest has hatched at 4425 Gulf of Mexico Drive (La Playa Condominiums) and will be excavated at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3. Parking will be at the Longboat Harbour beach access, which is just south of La Playa Condominiums.

The University of South Florida and Mote Marine Laboratory both won a $2 million federal grant for small business generation. The U.S. Department of Commerce grant expands the USF Connect program to the Mote Aquaculture Research Park, supporting a test-bed and business innovation facility stemming from Mote’s programs in sustainable energy and protein for food production, according to a press release. Mote’s inland building in Sarasota applies water management principles in farm raising fish protein.
