Edgar the turtle turns 18

Join Mote Marine for Edgar the sea turtle’s birthday party from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Mote Aquarium. Guests will watch Mote staff train Edgar and can talk to the trainers who work with her. The Sarasota County portion of Gulf of Mexico Drive will be repaved at a later date, moved from its original start date of Aug. 23 to sometime in September. Heavy rains have been delaying the repaving project, as well as scheduling conflicts.

The Department of Labor calls Labor Day a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and wellbeing of our country. The first Labor Day was celebrated Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. The day of the holiday was changed to the first Monday in September in 1884. Congress passed an act officially June 28, 1894, making the first Monday in September a legal holiday.
