On Patrol Longboat Key – Week ending April 12, 2019

The following are actual police reports as written by Longboat Key Police Officers. They are edited for length, punctuation and to protect privacy.

March 31

Traffic violation

4:22 p.m.

Officer Bergeron while at Bayfront Park observed a gray Nissan fail to stop at the lighted crosswalk. No one had entered the crosswalk as the vehicle passed through. Officer Bergeron activated his emergency lights and stopped the vehicle in the 4200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive. Officer Bergeron explained the reason for his stop and advised the visitor from Kentucky to please be aware of the numerous lighted crosswalks on Longboat Key. She apologized and advised that she will be more careful. Officer Bergeron advised her if there had been someone in the crosswalk she would have been issued a UTC. The driver was issued a written warning.


April 6

Parking in front of driveway

7:50 p.m.

Sgt. Coffman while on patrol observed a vehicle parked illegally at the entrance to Mar Vista Restaurant. The vehicle was unoccupied at the time. While Sgt. Coffman was completing a written warning the owner came out to the vehicle. He stated that he had parked there to go inside to pick up a take out order. Sgt. Coffman explained the violation to him and handed him his copy of the warning.


April 7

Loose dog

12:48 p.m.

Officer Bobianski responded to 5500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive for a report of a loose dog. Upon arrival, the dog was no longer in the park. Residents advised it went back into the woods towards toward a house on Gulf Bay Drive. No sign of animal on Gulf Bay Drive also.


Highway obstruction

1:29 p.m.

Officer Cooper observed a tree down in the roadway on Harbourside Drive blocking southbound traffic. Officer Cooper notified a man at Public Works who advised this is a private roadway and he will notify the proper people from the homeowner’s association. Nothing further.


Boat collision

1:32 p.m.

Officer Connors while on marine patrol in Sarasota Bay was dispatched to the 10th Street Boat Ramp for a report of a boat collision between a PWC and a power boat, with a party in the water. Upon arrival, the party had been removed from the water and transported to the boat ramp. Officer Connors assisted Sarasota Police and Florida Fish and Wildlife until no further assistance was needed.


April 8

Assist outside agency

8:01 p.m.

Officer Hodo was dispatched to 300 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive in reference to an assist Sarasota Police Department who found a car at 3500 block of South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota running and unoccupied that belonged to a Longboat Key residence. Officer Hodo contacted the gate guard who told him that the couple had went out to dinner approximately one hour prior to Officer Hodo’s arrival. Officer Hodo checked the residence and noted that no one was home. Officer Hodo did not see any signs of suspicious activity, while at the residence. Officer Hodo was later contacted by the gate guard that the residence had come home. Officer Hodo was advised by the gate guard that the couple had made contact with the police after they had dinner, forgetting their keys in the car. No further investigation.


April 10

Boat in distress

7:49 p.m.

Sgt. Coffman responded to a report of a vessel in distress near Longboat Pass. The report was of a sailboat possibly grounded on the sandbar near the pass. While Sgt. Coffman was en route he was advised that SeaTow had arrived and was in the process of pulling the sailboat off the sandbar. There were no injuries and no law enforcement was needed.
