St. Armands parking garage built, meters to start charging in 2019

While finding precious parking on St. Armands Circle is nearly always a difficult task, parking a few minutes away will soon get a major boost as a new, four-story parking garage became a reality this year. Residents saw it under construction through the second half of 2018.

The City of Sarasota’s 500 space parking plan includes the garage, which is located adjacent to the county Fire Department Station on North Adams Drive, behind the Columbia Restaurant.

According to the City, the garage will be completed by the start of 2019 and will be open for the season next year. To accommodate the site clearing and construction equipment, about 200 parking spaces have temporarily been lost while the new garage is built.  Parking fees for St. Armands Circle and the parking garage will not go into effect until the garage is completed ande includes new parking meters.

The total cost for the garage is $12 million, which will be paid in part through parking revenue, hourly charges for the garage and on-street meters as well as through a special assessment on St. Armands commercial property owners. The City says a rooftop solar panel will help power the facility and restrooms will be on the first floor.
