LBK Rotary passes the gavel

The gavel was ceremonially and literally passed by Longboat Key Rotary Club’s outgoing President, Jay Sparr, to successor Susan McGuire at a lively and laughter-filled dinner event at Cedars Café & Tiki Bar on June 12th. The assembled Rotarians celebrated their achievements in community service over the past year, roasted their outgoing President, enjoyed warm camaraderie, and heard a moving message from McGuire acknowledging the varied and significant contributions and talents of the club’s members. Besides continuing the Rotary Club’s local projects in staffing a food pantry, picking up trash on an “adopted” stretch of Gulf of Mexico Drive, promoting literacy, celebrating and honoring our veterans and first responders, and coordinating the “Josh the Otter” water safety program in Sarasota-area elementary schools, McGuire’s vision for the upcoming Rotary year includes development of widespread support for the international work of Smile Train in providing surgeries for children born in developing countries with cleft lip or palate. Through the “Just One Smile” initiative, a $250 donation will change the life of a child by funding his or her surgery.
