While finding precious parking on St. Armands Circle is nearly always a difficult task, parking a few minutes away will soon get a major boost as a new, four-story parking garage is underway.

The City of Sarasota’s 500 space parking plan includes the garage, which will be located adjacent to the county Fire Department Station on North Adams Drive, behind the Columbia Restaurant.

According to the City, the garage will be completed by the end of 2018 and will be open for the season next year. To accommodate the site clearing and construction equipment, about 200 parking spaces have temporarily been lost while the new garage is built.

The total cost for the garage is $12 million, which will be paid in part through parking revenue, hourly charges for the garage and on-street as well as through a special assessment on St. Armands commercial property owners.

The City says a rooftop solar panel will help power the facility and public restrooms will be available on the first floor. A groundbreaking is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23 at the garage site at 73 N. Adams Drive.
