On Patrol Longboat Key – Week ending December 15, 2017

The following are actual police reports as written by Longboat Key Police Officers. They are edited for length, punctuation and to protect privacy.

Dec. 9

Burglar alarm

3:59 p.m.

Officer Reno responded to Harbor Sound Drive and made contact with the homeowner who was in the garage doing home repairs. Hae explained he had to trip a couple breakers to cut the power to the doorbell as he was trying to replace it. He was unaware that turning off the power activated the house alarm. There were no other issues.


Dec. 10

Public service

2:23 p.m.

Officer Bergeron responded to Sabal Cove Drive in regard to a report of an excessive amount of water emanating from the ground at the location. Upon arrival, Officer Bergeron met with the HOA President who advised that she believed there may be a water main leak. The HOA President showed Officer Bergeron where the water leak was located. After checking the area, Officer Bergeron found that there was a separate water well for the sprinkler system that was running. Officer Bergeron found the shut off switch for the pump and turned it to off. The water slowly stopped emanating from the ground. The President advised that the homeowners were in France, she advised that she will contact them concerning the sprinkler pipe leak. Nothing further.


Car hauler blocking traffic

4:28 p.m.

Officer Bergeron while patrolling the area near the 1200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive, observed a car hauler pulling into the center lane. He activated his emergency lights and exited his patrol vehicle. Officer Bergeron made contact with the driver who had also exited his truck. Officer Bergeron advised him that he was parking illegally. He advised him that he would need to make other arrangements to off load his cargo. He promptly moved his truck without any issues.


Dec. 11

Suspicious vehicle

5:05 a.m.

Officer Houchins while on patrol in the 400 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive, observed a tan colored vehicle, lights out, parked near the gas pumps at the Mobil gas station. Due to the nature of recent criminal activity there, Officer Houchins stopped and investigated, the car was driven by a newspaper delivery driver and he was taking a break there due to fatigue. Case status closed.


Downed power line

3:39 p.m.

Officer Hodo responded to Bayou Hammock Road in reference to a fire due to downed power lines. Officer Hodo arrived and was advised by the Fire Department that lines are hanging low near the road out of traffic. Officer Hodo was further advised by the Fire Department that they will cord off the low wires and contact FPL for repair. No further investigation.


Dec. 12

Suspicious person

9:47 a.m.

Officer Nazareno responded to General Harris Street for a suspicious person call. Upon arrival, Officer Nazareno made contact with the complainant who advised that she observed a fishing boat on the canal behind her residence and did not believe it belonged there. Officer Nazareno’s preliminary investigation revealed that the person on the fishing boat was on public property and was not involved in any illegal activity. Case disposition closed.



6:41 p.m.

Sgt. Smith responded to 2500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive for a report of a fall. Upon arrival, the Longboat Key Fire Rescue was loading the patient into the ambulance to transport to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Case clear.


Burglar alarm

7:05 p.m.

Sgt. Smith was dispatched to Halyard Lane for a residential burglar alarm. Sgt. Smith checked the property and everything was locked up and appeared in order. No one was at the residence, there was strong wind in the area at the time of the call.
