Beachside tourism on Longboat Key received a major boost this week with the opening of Zota Beach Resort following nearly two years of construction.

Formerly the Hilton, Zota is a completely renovated and expanded resort and the energy and excitement of something new opening on Longboat Key was palpable on opening day.

Director of Human Resources Liz Cotner has been busy over the past six months hiring the more than 125 employees who will operate the 187-room resort.

Zota is owned by Ocean Properties, which owns more than 100 hotels including the Longboat Key Club Inn on the Beach, the Lido Beach Holiday Inn and Sandcastle Resort on Lido.

Director of Marketing for Ocean Properties Sandra Rios said that the Zota Resort will primarily appeal to families and travelers who want the complete beach experience.

The resort is set up with two hotel towers each on opposite sides of an infinity pool which is beside a bar. Cabanas line the pool’s edge, and are also available to rent for the day.

Currently, only the south tower’s 84 rooms are open to guests and the north tower will open in the fall in time for the busy season.

The restaurant is named Viento Kitchen and Bar and is led by Executive Chef Jason Pellett. The menu reflects Caribbean and Mediterranean flavors and techniques. The restaurant is open to the public and its hours are Sunday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Other amenities include a fitness center that overlooks the Gulf of Mexico as well as conference and event accommodations for up to 196 guests. Rios said the event accommodations will attract weddings and smaller business gatherings. The Zota Beach Resort is located at 4711 Gulf of Mexico Drive.
