Police arrest Sarasota man in Longboat Hit-and-Run case
Michael J. Rowe Jr. of Sarasota was arrested on April 14 by Longboat Key Police and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office for leaving the scene of a traffic crash with great bodily injuries.
This follows 12 days of investigation after 66-year-old Mike MacCormick was found on April 2 laying on the grass at 4949 Gulf of Mexico Drive after being struck by what a witness described as “an older white pick-up truck.”
The motorist sped off, leaving MacCormick in critical condition where he was found by Longboat Key Fire Rescue minutes after the incident. MacCormick was transported in critical condition to Blake Hospital where life-saving neurosurgery was performed. MacCormick’s condition has reportedly imporoved according to his son.
Additional charges are expected in relation to this incident. Michael Rowe Jr. was also arrested for two outstanding warrants which were unrelated to this investigation.
MacCormick had numerous cuts and bruises and had struck his head when he fell from the bicycle.
The incident occurred in front of Positano Condominiums where a witness said he was at the pool when he saw the bicyclist heading south as an older model white pickup truck passed. The witness told police he heard a ‘thud’ and heard someone yell “Oh, Shit” and that the pickup truck appeared like it ran over a bump as it went by the bicyclist and he then saw the bicyclist laying on the grass on the side of the road. The witness said he didn’t see the actual contact because he was on the opposite side of the vehicle.
Police quickly issued a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) for a white older model pickup truck heading southbound on Longboat Key with possible damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.
The use of Longboat Key’s license plate recording cameras, which are posted at each end of the island, helped the investigating officer, Longboat Key’s Sgt. Bourque, identify the truck and locate the driver.
The Investigation identified the vehicle as registered to a Sarasota resident.
Detective Bourque enlisted assistance from the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office and responded to 4029 Macintosh Road where the 28-year-old Michael Rowe was found and subsequently arrested. The 2005 Dodge truck was found to have front-end damage and was seized as evidence. Rowe was placed under arrest and transported to the Sarasota County Jail.
