The picture to the right tells the story. The North end of Longboat Key on the Bay side (AKA Beer Can or Greer Island) is shoaling so severely the lagoon enjoyed by wildlife and residents is almost cut off from access.

Property owner Maureen Merrigan wrote Town Manager Dave Bullock: “You can see access has gotten much worse to the lagoon over the past year and it is on the verge of closing off.  What is encouraging is there is a stretch of sand in place next to the sea grass should we want to dredge into sand.”

Merrigan added that she is encouraged by many discussions with the town over the past year and she said Bullock expressed desire to keep this channel open near Greer Island leading into the lagoon.  The area is used by many that live and visit the north end for kayaking, bird watching and fishing.

Bullock replied last week that the Town is planning to discuss the issue at a March 22 workshop meeting and staff is working on the presentation.
