Bayfront Park Recreation Center may open for Longboat’s busy season

The town of Longboat Key is attempting to open the Bayfront Park Recreation Center to allow the popular facility to serve residents and visitors in the upcoming busy season. Currently, the expanded Bayfront Park is under redevelopment and sufficient access and parking as well as an area for emergency vehicles to turn around would have to be in place for the Recreation Center to open. In essence, the effort is to carve out that small section of the park and allow it to be used while the remainder of the construction is completed.

The park is being built using $2 million that has been allocated from Sarasota County and an additional $1.11 million from the town. The new park will add nature trails, a kayak launch, pickleball courts, expanded fishing docks, a new playground and a Longboat Key first – a dog park.  Town Manager Dave Bullock said the new facility will also provide a public kayak storage area as well as ramp to enable public access to the popular paddling destinations along the shoreline and intercoastal.
