LBK Memoirs Class celebrates

Seated: From Left: Patsy McLaughlin, Barbara Hero, Pat Johnson Standing: Left: John Hardy, Charlie Shook (just a few of the members who attend during the summer).

The Memoirs Class at Longboat Island Chapel is celebrating the publication of Patsy McLaughlin’s second book of poetry, “Keeper of the Night.” The collection of poems follows the author’s journey through life, beginning with her growing-up years in a large farm family in the Ohio Valley, touching on the years of being a military wife and mother, volunteering with the homeless, and her retirement  on Longboat Key, on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Memoirs group has been meeting for the past 10 years, resulting in the publication of life stories by many of its attendees, with more in the works. The group meets the first and third Wednesday of each month at the Longboat Island Chapel.

All proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to the Longboat Island Chapel.  For more information: 941 383 6491

Growing Old Can Be Fun

I never thought much about it when I was young

But growing old can be fun

No one to tell you it’s time for bed

You sleep wherever you lay your head

Cant sleep then you get up and eat

Growing old is kind of sweet

You can read a book in the middle of the night

Or watch a movie until twilight

You can eat breakfast lunch and dinner out

The pounds you don’t worry so much about

Now growing old is not for everyone

Some People can’t handle that kind of fun

but if you find yourself already there

Make the best of it, let down your hair

Meet with your friends on life’s shifting sands

And keep on keeping on and making those plans
