Voters say ‘Yes’ to Key Club

In one of the most anticipated votes in Longboat Key history, a majority of Longboaters said ‘yes’ to allow the Longboat Key Club to build up to 300 tourism units on its Islandside property. The results showed that of 3,669 votes cast, a total of 1,948, or 53 percent, voted in favor of the proposal. The turnout was high with more than 57 percent of Longboat Key’s 6,370 voters participating.

The Sarasota County portion of Longboat Key determined the outcome with more than 55 percent saying yes to the measure. Manatee County was against the idea overall, with 562, or 53.5 percent voting against it and 488 voting in support. Manatee County did not turn out at the polls with the same percentage. Only 51 percent of Manatee County voters participated in the vote, while more than 60 percent of Sarasota County voters cast a ballot.

By the end of 2015, the Key Club and its owners, Ocean Properties, have not submitted a redevelopment plan or proposal to the town. The vote does give the owners the vested right to build the units when it desires to do so.
