Longboat Fish Fry officially on hold

The Longboat Key Historical Society’s annual Fish Fry fundraiser that was slated for Oct. 30, is officially on hold said event organizer Shirley Beachum.

“We may hold it in the spring; that is the plan,” said Beachum after spending Friday talking to vendors and fellow organizers.

Beachum said too many moving parts necessary to get the event in order were not coalescing including the critical fact that the tickets did not come in from the printer on time.

But Beachum noted that the event may actually attract more people in the Spring and the weather might even be warmer and the postponement has nothing to do with a lack of interest or commitment.

The event started in the 1950s as a fundraiser by the Longboat Key Volunteer Fire Department in order to raise money for a fire truck. The Historical Society started the Fish Fry again in 2005 where it was held at the Mar Vista Restaurant in the Longbeach Village for a number of years until owner of the restaurant, Ed Chiles, decided to not continue the tradition at that site. That is when the event moved to Cedars Resort.

Tickets will be $30 and dinner will include grouper, sides as well as beer and wine. The band Blues Pig will also perform as has been a tradition for years.

It would certainly be a shame to abandon this tradition. I was involved in these fish fry events back in the 50′s. Please continue to contact me.
