Longboat Key’s Sharapova dominates

The Russian fourth seed battered World No 123 Hogenkamp with a display of trademark power, encountering fleeting resistance in the opening set before taking control.

The second set saw Sharapova dominate with the 2004 Wimbledon champion finishing off her opponent with a pair of thunderous forehands.

While a lot of players complained about the heat at the venue, Sharapova remained unfazed.

“It’s much warmer in my hometown of Longboat Key, Florida. I think I’ve trained quite long in the heat over there.

I think just the preparation of understanding it’s going to be warm, not going for too much because you want to make the points quicker than normal because of the heat, just being a little bit smarter out there is the most important.”

Meanwhile, Sam Stosur, the 22nd seed, completed a straight sets win over Urszula Radwanska, dispatching the Pole 6-3, 6-4. Madison Keys posted a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Stefanie Voegele in their first-round tie.
