Harry’s breakfast infused with delight

Longboat Key food aficionados who love incredible gourmet breakfasts are in luck; fine cuisine is just outside your front door.

Harry’s Continental Kitchen, which is known for its exciting and fresh dinners, has breakfasts to match. Recently I was fortunate enough to taste my way through these amazing dishes and definitely broke a New Year’s resolution or two. At least I did what every restaurant wants; I showed up with my appetite.

I first tried Harry’s breakfast on a Wednesday morning. I would typically decline a cocktail on a Wednesday morning; however Harry’s can now tempt me to try their Bloody Mary any day of the week. The restaurant infuses Tito’s vodka with fresh cooked bacon, creating a flavor that most Bloody Mary’s cannot achieve. I let Hal Christensen, Harry’s son and my breakfast tour guide, suggest the menu items.

If I were ordering for myself, I would have ordered a plate of spinach with three egg whites in attempt to keep with my healthy resolutions. Fortunately Hal suggested more interesting menu items, each having the highest quality ingredients. As I delighted in their tastes, I became completely obsessed with the Low Country Shrimp and Grits, which consisted of jumbo shrimp, cheese grits, bacon and garlic sauce.

I tried to be inconspicuous with how much I ate but couldn’t be. Fortunately Hal was the only one to see me completely wipe the plate clean. As much as I indulged in the Shrimp and Grits, I also was able to enjoy the Butcher Benedict with chorizo sausage and the Roast Beef Hash Far Horizons. (During the 1970s, Longboat Key’s most popular venue was the Far Horizons resort hotel. Its restaurant was the “talk of the town” and at the time, the head chef was Harry of Harry’s Continental Kitchen.) Finally, as if I wasn’t already full, the Old Fashion German Pancake simply melted in my mouth. Topped with apple and maple syrup, it was like dessert for breakfast.

Harry’s Continental Kitchen is definitely a destination restaurant and worth traveling to, yet fortunately for Longboat, it is our back yard. The flavors of the breakfast are a must to indulge in, and you will see me there again soon spoiling myself with the restaurant’s amazing culinary creations.
