New Longboat Key Town Commission in place; Brown named Mayor, Brenner Vice Mayor

At the March 19 statutory meeting, Mayor Jim Brown and Vice Mayor David Brenner remained in their positions as the commission re-appointed Brown for Mayor and Brenner for Vice Mayor. This will be Brown and Brenner’s third year as Mayor and Vice Mayor, respectively. But first the commission had to repeal a previous 1998 resolution that limited the number of years a Mayor could serve to two. Commissioner Phill Younger motioned to repeal the resolution, and Commissioner Terry Gans seconded it. When the commission repealed the resolution, it allowed Brown

and Brenner to be nominated for a third year to their posts.

Gans said, “I agree commissions should have flexibility and if they’re working well, they should have the ability to continue to work well.”

Commissioner Lynn Larson said, “I agree because I don’t think the commission from the past should reach forward to the future commissions, telling them what to do.”

Brown was appreciative of the commission’s decision to re-appoint him as Mayor.

“I don’t know what to say in situations like these, and I don’t know what I’ve

done to earn this much appreciation of my fellow commissioners,” said Brown. “Seriously, this is a major thing for me to accept. Nothing I do is possible without these other six people.”
