Longboat Election Day Tuesday March 12: Manatee voters go to Longboat Island Chapel, Sarasota voters go to Town Hall

Early voting is over and Election Day, March 12, is closing in on Longboat Key Commission candidates.

Sarasota County registered voters can cast their ballot on Tuesday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 501 Bay Isles Road. Manatee County registered voters can vote at Longboat Island Chapel, 6200 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Polls at both locations are open on March 12 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For any information call Longboat Key Town Hall at 316-1999.

A total of four seats are up for election with Commissioner Jack Duncan as the sole candidate running unopposed for re-election to his District 2 seat.

The contested races are comprised of incumbent Mayor Jim Brown being challenged by resident Larry Grossman for the District 4 seat; At-Large incumbent Commissioner Phill Younger against Gene Jaleski and the other At-Large Commission seat held by Commissioner Terry Gans is being challenged by south Longboat Key resident Irwin Pastor.

The number of early votes registered by the Town Clerk’s office are slightly down in Sarasota County this year, though not significantly, from  the 2012 election. They are up slightly in the Manatee County section of Longboat Key.

In the Sarasota County portion of Longboat, 739 early votes were cast, slightly down from 791 last year. The number of early votes in the Manatee County portion of Longboat Key was 188 this year, up from 184 last year.

Absentee ballots were also tallied this week by the Town Clerk’s office. The following is a breakdown of the absentee ballots that were returned:

Sarasota County:

Absentee Ballots that were requested and mailed in 2013: 734

Absentee Ballots that were returned in 2013: 439 (60%)

(in 2012, 169 requested)

(in 2012, 117 were returned or 69%)

 

Manatee County:

Absentee Ballots that were requested and mailed: 366

Absentee Ballots that were returned: 199 (52%)

(in 2012, 164 were requested)

(in 2012, 86 were returned or 52%)
