Commission approves first reading of 2011-2012 budget

The Town Commission this week approved the first reading of its 2011-2012 budget, which included a 1.8872 millage rate, the same rate as the 2010-2011 budget.

The commission decided to eliminate a proposed business-tax increase, which would have created an additional $8,000 in revenue, citing that now is not a good time to increase taxes on businesses.

The commission continued a $10,000 six-month contract with Studio 26 Productions out of Bradenton for the televised meetings. They also will keep $6,000 in the budget for iPad tablets for commissioners, as a way to decrease paper costs and increase efficiency.

Donations to Solutions to Avoid Red Tide (START), the Economic Development Corporations of Sarasota and Manatee counties, Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, and the Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence will be made for a total of $44,600 instead of the proposed $52,400. The employee pension plans will account for $2.7 million in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The commission will hold a second reading at the next budget meeting at 5:01 p.m., Monday, Sept. 26 in Town Hall.
