Commissioners on Longboat Key may soon be considering solar power. As evidenced in a recent string of e-mails through Town Hall, municipalities that convert to solar power are receiving rebates and grants.
“We’re researching several possibilities regarding solar power right now,” said Public Works Project Manager James Linkhogle, “Most of the grants are federal and state, and the rebates are through the power company, FP&L.”
One company approached the town via e-mail, citing examples of cities already participating in the rebate and grant programs.
The company is Earth Friendly Technology LLC based in Lehigh Acres, Fla., and they are working on a program that allows installation of PV Solar power systems for no cost to non-profit organizations in Florida. The company is working with the city governments of Bartow, Ocala and Ft. Myers, as well as Lee and Palm Beach counties.
Town Commissioner Jack Duncan requested that Town Manager Bruce St. Denis place the subject of solar power on a future workshop agenda. St. Denis responded that Public Works Director Juan Florensa and Linkhogle were already researching the subject. They will report to the Town Commission as soon as their evaluation is completed.
