2011 Small Business of the Year Awards announced

Save Our Seabirds was awarded the 2011 Small Business of the Year Award in the Non Profit Organization category. Save our Seabirds was recognized for its volunteers’ and employees’ tireless work seven days a week on behalf of the numerous injured coastal birds, which are brought to the sanctuary or rescued at the sight of their injury. Save our Seabirds is wholly dependent on donations. Its mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and release birds back into their natural habitat. The sanctuary, 1708 Ken Thompson Parkway, is open to the public seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.


The Longboat Key, Lido Key, St. Armands Key Chamber of Commerce announced its 2011 Small Business of the Year Awards Wednesday, June 22, at the chamber’s Annual Small Business of the Year Awards Presentation. This year’s event was held at The Players Theatre in Sarasota and was sponsored by Beth Callans Management Corp.

Winners and finalists are as follows:


Rookie Business of the Year

The winner is Your Fitness Instructor, Petar Sibinkic, at 20 Avenue of the Flowers, Longboat Key.

Finalists were Green Ginger Hair Salon, Gordon & Linda Hall, at 10 S. Adams Drive, Sarasota, and Secur-All Insurance Agency, George & Sandra Ceshker, at 510 Bay Isles Road, Suite 1, Longboat Key.


Small Business (10 or less employees)

The winner is Kitchens by Kerrie, Kerrie Lehnert, 5360 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Suite 108, Longboat Key.

Finalists were Foreman & Associates, Michael Foreman, 2511 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota; GCSI Paintscape, Glenn Shecter, 8251 Blakie Court, Sarasota, and SP Hand & Associates, Sara Hand, 2344 Bee Ridge Road, Suite 115, Sarasota.


Small Business (11 or more employees)

The winner is Dattoli Cancer Center, Ginya Carnahan, 2803 Fruitville Road, Sarasota.

The finalist was Casa Del Mar Beach Resort, D.M. Williams, 4621 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key.


Non-Profit Organization

The winner is Save Our Seabirds, Lee Fox, 1708 Ken Thompson Parkway, Sarasota.

The finalist was The Players Theatre, Michelle Pingel, 838 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.
