Brenner to attend coastal insurance forum

Vice Mayor Dave Brenner is attending a forum on insurance in coastal communities sponsored by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune June 1.

Coastal insurance premiums in Florida have risen as much as 350 percent over the last five years. Floridians have witnessed the cancellation of 2 million policies, and thousands of homeowners have been forced to buy insurance from a state pool that many believe could not pay its bills after a major hurricane.

The Herald-Tribune asked the commissioners to attend as guests at a panel discussion, “Insurance: Surging Premiums, Shrinking Choices,” about the insurance industry as Florida enters hurricane season.

Moderated by Herald-Tribune Opinion Editor Tom Tryon, the panel will feature Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Paige St. John, who continues to investigate Florida’s dependence on the reinsurance industry. Attendees will also hear from Florida Sen. Mike Fasano, Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate Terry Butler and other special guests.
