Taking relief during a round of golf…

Several years ago, a journalist and television anchor by the name of Tom Brokaw wrote a weighty encomium to the 15 million or so men and women of the World War II era armed forces and to their war industry civilian counterparts on the home front.

Sunday’s Sarasota Herald-Tribune brought a most disturbing bit of news. A story of spreading, and as yet unchecked, hate was headlined with: “Monks’ plan for monastery in ranch area hits roadblock.”

The Town Commission should be congratulated for passing the new budget with a reasonable tax raise without the usual posturing.

It’s budget time again, or still. The LBK Town Commission has now passed the final millage rate (1.8872) and the budget for the coming fiscal year. That’s good. The budget, a plan as we know, is essentially the appropriation for the life of town government.

Several commissioners are eager to drastically alter both the Vision Plan and the town’s Comprehensive Plan to save retail on Longboat Key, they say. The town attorney believes the Vision Plan and the Comprehensive Plan are virtually one in the same.

In not too many days from now, we shall trek down to the polls as all good citizens must and make our mark in hopes of saving the republic from its ever-impending doom. Hopefully—but not probably—everyone else will do the same. And what will the outcome be?
