Primary elections Tuesday, Aug. 24
Only voters who are registered members of major political parties may vote for their party’s candidates in a primary election.
Longboat Key residents registered to vote in Manatee or Sarasota County will have the opportunity to cast their ballots in the Tuesday, Aug. 24 Primary Election. In an effort to provide readers with pre-voting ballot information, following are Democratic, Republican and Nonpartisan ballots.
Florida is a closed primary state. This means that only voters who are registered members of major political parties may vote for their party’s candidates in a primary election. However, if all candidates in a race have the same party affiliation and the winner will have no opposition in the general election, all qualified voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote in the primary for that office. This is known as a Universal Primary Contest (UPC). There is one UPC on the Aug. 24 primary ballot. Additionally, all registered voters, including those without party affiliation, may vote on nonpartisan judicial races, school board races and local referendum questions on a primary ballot.
