Potent Politics: Wouldn’t it be nice…

Contributing Columnist

This is a very quiet time in politics on Longboat Key. I have given some thought on what I would like the future to be on the key relative to politics. Here are some of my thoughts:

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Town Commission would be more unified than they are now? Wouldn’t it be nice if Mayor George Spoll would not bluster and strut as much as he does now? That would certainly lend the commission greater accord.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Vice Mayor Jim Brown would refrain from bringing up his past success as an architect and designer? He does have some very good ideas, but less bravado would help.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Commissioner Dave Brenner would consider less business development on the key and more residential progress? He, too, has positive thoughts on the commission but is constrained by his desire for economic development.

Wouldn’t be nice if Commissioner Lynn Larson would think before she speaks? A little thought goes a long way.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Commissioner Hal Lenobel were younger so that we would have the benefit of his presence for many years to come? He is the Rock of Gibraltar on the commission.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Bob Siekmann would be a little less erratic and more predictable? It would be nice if he decides to stay on the Key; he is a good legislator.

Phil Younger is still a question mark on the question. I think he will be a valuable asset on the commission. Time will tell.

There are a few odds and ends upon which I would like to comment. The staked palm trees on each end of the Key are absolutely unnecessary. They are ugly and not needed. Who was responsible for their presence?

The new blue, blank signs need completion. Why is it taking so long to finish the signs? Is it that difficult a decision to reach?

The budget for this year is just about finalized. Bruce St. Denis, the town manager, has done a most commendable job in its formulation. Congratulations to St. Denis and his staff, Finance Director Tom Kelly and all the others who participated in drawing up the budget. Our town is in good hands.

Wouldn’t it be nice if just one person on LBK knew who Dan Dowd is?
