Big Pass, New Pass inlet management plan underway
Sarasota County commissioners will receive and consider the final inlet management plan for Big Pass/New Pass, which began in 2005 with an assessment of existing and needed data.
Phase II began in 2006 and involved an engineering study of the physical and environmental data; numerical hydrologic and morphologic modeling; and examination of coastal engineering alternatives within the study area. Phase III, a peer review effort, followed in 2008. The final management plan merges the results of the three phases into one document, which will be presented to commissioners by Jim Marino and Cliff Truitt of Coastal Tech Corporation, the county’s consultant on the project. At the conclusion of the presentation, county commissioners directed staff to:
• Provide guidance to develop the scope for a coastal monitoring program.
• Provide guidance for expanded additional channel marking.
• Identify potential partnering for channel construction and maintenance, including the city of Sarasota, the West Coast Inland Navigation District and other stakeholders Commissioners also agreed to defer maintenance dredging to a later phase.
