Hlywa residence burglarized

While Longboat Key residents Andrew Hlywa and Dawn diLorenzo were out of town for the funeral of Andrew’s mother, Anna Hlywa, the couple’s residence was burglarized. According to Hlywa, friends of the couple were checking the residence and arming and disarming the home alarm system.

On Tuesday, July 20, Hlywa stated that the rear sliding door was jammed open and burglars pulled the alarm system completely off the wall. He also said the home was ransacked.

“They must have been there a long time because they went through our entire home and took items they wanted and left other items behind,” said Hlywa.

The family is distraught over the incident and is offering a reward of $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator or perpetrators of the crime. Some of the items missing from the home are diLorenzo’s expansive crystal rock collection, jewelry and a camera.

This is the second time the home as been burglarized. Two years ago on Father’s Day the couple return to find the entire house burglarized.

“I can’t believe this happened to us again. After the last burglary we really stepped up our home security and now this,” said Hlywa.

The family is asking for community assistance. Hlywa wants this crime to be solved. If you have any information in regards to suspicious activity or the crime itself please contact the Longboat Key Police Department at 316-1977.

The Hlywa burglary is just so sad.
To lose a loved one is terrible, to lose things that can not be replaced is bad, but to be robbed again, a second time on Long Boat Key is indefensible.
Last year we lost 2 policewomen.
I asked the Town then for security cameras on both bridges, the same kind that are in most convenience stores, banks, shopping centers and places where the businesses care for the safety of their customers.
Just like those that are already in place here on LBK.
I was told it cost $50,000, and that was to much to spend.
I think security cameras would save a lot more than the cost to install.
Crooks don’t like to have their pictures taken and a nice sign saying “Smile your are on Longboat Key, we have taken your picture, we care for your safety” would be remembered by crooks and a good way for solving these pesky break-ins and thievery we are having by having time lines and tag numbers.
I would gladly trade a few of those palm trees that are jammed together on both ends of our island, give up the new Town Welcome signs, or traffic signs to be “Protected and Served,” by something that provides real value, Safety and Security on Longboat Key.

I think Bob Craft makes a very good argument for cameras.

  3. Janet Weiss says:

Yes, I agree that cameras on the bridges would definitely enhance the security on the island. We could all benefit from that additional peace of mind. Palm trees are a nice touch, but safety should be a priority.

    Tragic story.
I agree and vote YES for Key Cameras.
I’m currently installing a “welcome” camera on my front entry and back lanai to greet any energetic bad guys.
